Our Story
Ebenezer Baptist Church was organized on January 2, 1892 under the guidance of Reverend Jenkins. The church was originally designated as a "colored" church located in the Village of Ebenezer Township.
The congregation worshipped in a brush arbor structure until 3 acres of land were purchased to allow for expansion and construction in the 1940s.
The congregation flourished at its new location at 270 South Herlong Ave. (formerly Old Gin Mill Road and Cathcart Road) in excess of 60 years.
Pastorial leadership has been remarkably stable:
Reverend Jenkins 1892 - 1906 Various Ministers 1907 - 1913 Rev. William Honor 1914 - 1947 Dr. John C. Honor 1947 - 1985 Dr. John G. Whitfield 1985 - 1987 Dr. Charles A. Woods 1988 - present
Dr. Charles A. Woods' visionary direction influenced the Ebenezer Baptist Church congregants to take a leap of faith by purchasing 2 acres of adjacent land located at 290 South Herlong Avenue. On August,14 2005, the first service was held in our current worship edifice.
